Bill was born in Ottawa, but spent the bulk of his childhood in St. John's, Newfoundland. While memories of school are vague, he has vivid recollections of the incredible land (and sea) scapes, varied wildlife and strong sense of community. Forged in childhood experience, Bill's appreciation of nature and respect for the environment continues to this day, and provides strong impetus for his pursuit of 'green' solutions to environmental problems, and ultimately, his involvement with REAL Energy Alternatives Limited.
Bill moved to Peterborough in 1985, to attend Trent University. While at Trent he found time to manage a university pub, serve on student government, both play and coach varsity basketball, and occasionally attend classes. It was at Trent that Bill met his future wife, Jennifer (Moon). After graduation he attended Queen's University to complete his Bachelor of Education. Bill and Jennifer were married in 1990 and immediately settled in Peterborough - Bill teaching at a downtown elementary school and Jennifer completing her studies at Trent.
Bill and Jennifer have two chidren - Emma and Owen. Both are involved in a variety of activities (Emma is a little more adventurous/athletic, Owen more scientific/technical) and both enjoy travelling, camping, canoeing and exploring the outdoors. Jennifer owns and operates a private day care (a full house of lovely children - all part of the extended family), and Bill continues to teach full-time. Home is 'filled in' by a number of cats, a ball python and two big dogs - a newfy called Paddy and a Bernese mountain called Hugo.
For the past twenty years, Bill has worked primarily in traditionally underserved/underfunded school communities, always working towards providing appropriate supports and addressing fundamental inequities for and with students, their families , and the broader community. Over time, Bill has served as a member and/or chair on a range of committees. He currently serves on the Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario Political Action Committee and is also a negotiator on the ETFO Collective Bargaining Team.
As a classroom teacher, Bill witnesses daily the enormous impact of knowledge on attitude. Only 15 years ago, the Peterborough County Board of Education Environmental Program Committee, which he Co-Chaired, faced strong opposition to the implementation of a basic recycling program in schools. Today the pre-dominant focus of his school board, as articulated by the Director of Education, is the development of comprehensive approaches to achieving more 'eco-friendly' schools. Bill believes that our understanding of the pressing environmental issues of the day should, and must, drive us towards a more systematic and intentional approach to change.
Bill is thrilled to have opportunity to bring his academic, professional and 'real-world' knowledge and organizational, communication, and advocacy skills to his work in marketing and sales for REAL Energy Alternatives Limited - an opportunity to work with family and an opportunity to promote REAL change in the world.
